Decorate My Fridge - the tumblelog

Hades and mints, in the interest of compartmentalizing my web life, I’m slowly but surely removing the videos I have posted on this site and placing them on my tumblelog, which is located at:

dmf.tumblr.com (warning: it’s a mess of a website with no proper navigation as there’s really no need)

For now, decoratemyfridge.com and  decoratemyfridge.com/dmf take you to the same place, you know, for those of you who have trouble typing shorter urls. In the not-too-distant future, I’ll be reworking the actual site into something more fun.

G’blah will now be solely dedicated to boring things I write, create or otherwise provide commentary on. Conversely, things I want to steal from other sites without giving proper citation will now be featured on DMF. Got it? Excellent.

Now head over to DMF and watch Forklift Driver Klaus.

Yeah, I tweet. So what?

This video paints a pretty clear picture of twitter’s intended purpose.

You can find/follow/befriend me @ twitter.com/geoffroper. I post frequently despite the knowledge that most of my attempts to connect with the outside world are futile. One of these days, I plan on typing something meaningful (in 140 characters or less) that resonates beyond my own amusement.

2007: A Year

chicago.jpg Overview
For me 2007 was filled with very little activity or progress, hence my decision to move back to Texas to reboot. Basically it was a knee-jerk reaction to winding up in the hospital twice in as many months without any health coverage. That’s a major oversimplification but it was the last straw before the reassessment of my priorities.

I miss Chicago. I miss my friends. I miss the places I frequented.

Enough reminiscing; onto the fun stuff.

G’BLAH PLAYS FAVORITES
A few years ago, say 2002/3, many of my friends would compile top ten lists. I think this stopped once Neal moved away and the internet became saturated with such lists, prompting what will be known in the future as “Early 21st Century List Fatigue Syndrome.” I remember it being a lot of fun though. It was always interesting to see what my friends felt was the most engaging music of the year. There would always be surprises in everyone’s lists, even if we had spent the entire year talking about each of these albums. So I thought I might as well take a crack at it again. These aren’t necessarily my top ten albums. In fact there are 11, and I sure I’m forgetting some.

Best Album Ever*
scottwalker.jpgMy favorite Album of 2007 (easily) was Scott Walker’s The Drift. Technically this was released in June of 2006, making it the best album of 2006, 2007, and now, 2008. I was so busy gushing about The Drift to anyone who would listen that I forgot to gush about it here on g’blah.

It’s a lesson in history, poetry, avant-garde classical music, and experimental rock. And it plays like surreal horror movie. It is occasionally dismissed as being difficult to listen to, but I don’t buy that at all. Repeated listens reveal unique, inventive song structures that play between atonal and melodic tendencies. The lyrical themes work in a similar manner, often combining unrelated subject matter into cleverly woven concepts.

Oh yeah, he’s 64 years old and has made what I now consider to be the album of his career. I know I know… What about Scott 3 or Scott 4? They’re definitely still two of my favorites, but The Drift is a work so wholly unique and singular, it could never be duplicated or even approximated by another human being. A++++++

*A nod to the hyperbolic language of friends.

Actual “2007″ Albums I enjoyed:

  • Robert Wyatt - Comicopera
  • Panda Bear - Person Pitch
  • Richard Hawley - Lady’s Bridge
  • Grinderman - Grinderman
  • The Bees - Octopus
  • Radiohead - In Rainbows
  • White Rabbits - Fort Nightly
  • Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil
  • Field Music - Tones of Town
  • Burial - Untrue

Chewsing a Dream

too-tarts-dream-chews-764769.jpg I’d like to say a few words regarding my new favourite snack, Dream Chews. These delicious fruit chews are made with 80% real fruit, natural juices, and… what’s that?… HONEY?! The result is positively the most amazing little snack money can buy. Speaking of which, remember to bring a little extra dough to your local convenient store, because these babies are kinda pricey at $2.49 a pack, but trust me, they are most certainly worth it. Once purchased (though I am constantly tempted to eat them in the store), I’ll usually cram 3 or 4 chews in my mouth at a time and then brace myself for the impending flavour explosion.

OK I know what you’re saying: “Geoff, you were intoxicated when you bought those.” And yes maybe that is true for each of the 5 times I have purchased them & maybe there are better snacks out there, but I’ll tell you this: no other snack has ever lifted my spirits so high to necessitate a g’blah entry following the fifth encounter with my tastebuds.

edit: I just checked the Junk Food Blog, and the suggested retail price for a pack of Dream Chews is $.99-$1.29. Someone is getting ripped off and that someone is me. I feel cheated. Now the search begins for appropriately priced chews.

White Rabbits “The Plot” on Letterman

WITNESS my buddies on national television. This marks the very first time any of my talented friends have done something of this caliber. Their album Fort Nightly is excellent, to boot. So far it has earned 4.5 stars from All Music Guide, an 8.1 from Pitchfork, and pretty much everyone else is in agreement. Oh yes, they also played the Glastonbury Festival in the UK, Siren Fest in NYC, SXSW in Austin, and are scheduled to hit the road with The Cribs next week. Expect more amazing things to come from these guys in the near, near future. Congratulations White Rabbits; I’m very proud.

My very dear friend Gabe Levinson is putting together a monster of an animation show Memorial Day weekend.

‘John’ is John Kricfalusi, otherwise known as John K, the creator of Ren & Stimpy. ‘Bill’ is none other than Oscar-nominee Bill Plympton. Thanks to Gabe, these two masters of modern animation are coming to Chicago for an exclusive one-time engagement.

Details and ticket info are available on the website: thejohnandbillshow.com

And the myspace page: myspace.com/johnandbill

If you are in Chicago May 25th and/or 26th, this show is NOT TO BE MISSED.
